Vietnam lawmakers have approved a plan to resume the development of nuclear power to ensure national energy security after an eight-year hiatus.

The National Assembly on Saturday tasked the government with restarting Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project in the central province.

Nuclear power is expected to help Vietnam diversify its energy sources, ensure energy security, and meeting net zero targets by 2050.

The project involves two nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuan, situated in areas that have been thoroughly studied by both domestic and international consultancies to ensure they meet strict global safety standards.

The government has pledged that the development of nuclear power would utilize the latest technologies and ensure highest safety to reduce risks to humans and the environment.

By the end of August, there were 415 energy power reactors active globally with another 62 being constructed.

Nuclear power accounts for around 10% of global energy production. It is being used by 32 countries and being considered by 20 others.
